Unfortunately, W. A. Lütgen is one of the composers with very few biographical proofs. Probably Wilhelm Anton Lütgen, also written Lüttgen (1781 - 1857), is a violinist, composer and music teacher in Cologne. The best known of his compostions is probably the horn quartet op.19 (published around 1835 at Mompour / Bonn), which still belongs to the standard work of many horn quartets and has been recorded several times on CD.
In 1839, publishing house Mompour published the Divertissement pour 3 cors in Bonn.
Its four movements convince by their competent using of the different horn registers. The date of origin makes it difficult to say, whether it was written for the natural or the valve horn. The third horn part would be quite virtuous for horn without any walves, but there are similar compositions by Dauprat and Oestreich.
