His Concerto for Two Horns and Orchestra was composed in 1818. As early as March 1819, it was published in orchestral parts by the Leipzig publisher Breitkopf & Härtel. There is currently no evidence of a performance, and no dedication is noted on the printed edition. However, due to its high level of virtuosity, it can be assumed that the concerto was written for two exceptional soloists.
Although valve technology had already been invented in 1814—and its inventor, Heinrich Stölzel, was active in Berlin—it is likely that Neithardt’s concerto was still conceived for valveless invention horns.
The string instrumentation of the orchestral material is 5/5/4/5, and the solo parts are included!
