Georges Julien Sieber was born in Paris on November 15, 1775. He was the son of Jean Georges Sieber, who was born in Franconia in 1734. The elder Sieber trained as a horn player and moved to Paris in 1758, where he worked as a hornist at the Comédie Française and later at the Opéra. In 1771 he opened a music publishing house, which soon became one of the most important publishers in Paris.
Georges Julien Sieber initially worked alongside his father in the family publishing house, where he certainly also received a solid musical education. Shortly before 1800 he founded a publishing house of his own. In 1798 he married Anne-Marie Le Duc, daughter of the music publisher Le Duc.
In 1815 Georges Julien Sieber took over his father's publishing house.
The present work was composed around 1812. It is dedicated to a Madame Lafitte. Its exact title reads:
Seconde Nocturne ou Divertissement concertant pour Forté Piano avec Accompagnement de Cor, ou Violon, ou Flûte, composé et dédié à Madame Lafitte par G. J. Sieber
The title does not mention that a version scored for oboe instead of flute was also provided. This is only apparent from the individual part.
