Peter Joachim (Johann) Fick (1708–1743)
Fick is represented in the music collection of the Regional Library of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in Schwerin by at least 26 concertos, six Baroque symphonies and other works. He came from Hamburg-Altona, where his ancestors had already served as town musicians (Stadtpfeifer). In 1730 a "Laquay monsieur Fick" was employed at the court of Schwerin, and by 1740 he appears there again, this time as court organist. Fick died in Schwerin in 1743 and was buried in the cathedral cloister on 26 December of that year.
Fick was not only a prolific composer but also a dedicated copyist – particularly of works by Vivaldi, which seem to have fascinated him and of which numerous copies in his hand survive. Today it is not always possible to say with certainty whether a given manuscript is a copy or an original composition by Fick himself.
Concerto a 6 for 2 Horns and 2 Posthorns, 2 Violins, Viola and Basso Continuo
Alongside a Concerto a 4 for posthorn, horn and strings by Johann Ursinus (Beer), preserved in a copy by Fick, this is the second work in the Schwerin library's collection scored for posthorn. The two posthorn parts are notated within the horn parts, suggesting that the musicians of the time were likely able to play both instruments.
For modern performances, however, few horn players are able to manage this double demand. It is therefore recommended that the two posthorn parts also be doubled by trumpeters. This edition is a first printing.
