Albin Frehse was born on 10 February 1878 in Leipzig and spent many years as principal horn of the Gewandhaus Orchestra. In his 1903 application letter to the Gewandhaus, Frehse names the Gewandhaus's principal horn Arno Rudolph as his teacher. In that letter he also cites the Magdeburg municipal orchestra, the Royal Grand Opera in Warsaw, and the Hans Winterstein orchestra as previous positions where he served as principal horn. Frehse was a horn player with the Gewandhaus Orchestra from 1 June 1903 to 1939 (continuing to help out during the war years until 1946) and a professor at the Leipzig Conservatory (1926–1958, appointed professor in 1948). He died in Leipzig on 31 January 1973.

The source for this edition of 20 quartets for 4 horns is held by the editor: autograph manuscripts by Frehse in individual part-books. In this collection the composer brought together his own original compositions and arrangements. The markings found in the individual manuscript parts show that the pieces must have been played frequently.
