Wilhelm Anton Lütgen
Quartetto for Horn, Violin, Viola and Bass, Op. 30
Very little biographical information survives about Wilhelm Anton Lütgen. He is probably identical with the violinist, composer and music teacher (also spelled Lüttgen, 1781–1857) active in Cologne. His best-known composition is likely the Horn Quartet, Op. 19, published around 1835 by Mompour in Bonn, which remains part of the standard repertoire for horn quartets and has been recorded on CD several times.
Several chamber works for string instruments by Lütgen are also documented. In 1835 the publisher Mompour announced a Divertissement for three horns, Op. 11, now newly edited as ROM 162. As early as 1819, a Notturno for two flutes and two horns (ROM 067) was published by Schott.
This quartet was published in 1836 by Mompour in Bonn. It is dedicated to the horn player Räuber, who played in the court orchestra of the Prince of Lippe-Detmold.
