Fritz Krüger's "Lustiges Quartett" ("A Merry Quartet"), scored for the relatively unusual combination of oboe, clarinet, horn, and bassoon, is a humorous potpourri: numerous popular works — from the Radetzky March to Weber's Der Freischütz — are quoted and woven together with a wink.
The piece was first published in 1894 by Verlag Lehne & Co, Hanover.
In his book "Zukunft Musik – Eine Geschichte der Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt Weimar" (Böhlau Verlag, 2006), Wolfram Huschke mentions a performance on 7 April 1922, given as part of a lighthearted benefit concert by the teaching staff in support of scholarships at the Weimar Music Academy.
Unfortunately, nothing could be established about the identity of the composer or arranger Fritz Krüger.
