Franz Xaver Süßmayr (1766–1803), a pupil of W. A. Mozart, wrote this serenata in Baden near Vienna in 1793. Unfortunately, he never completed it. In the present first edition, the first movement is presented in both surviving versions, while movements 3 and 4 are published only in fragmentary form, following the autograph. It has not been possible to determine for whom this charming serenade was intended. However, in the summer of 1793 Süßmayr was staying at Guttenbrunn Castle near Baden as a guest of Baron Raymund von Wetzlar.
