The Sonata presented here in its first edition is based on a copy from the Engelhart collection at the University Library in Lund, Sweden.
Hinrich Christoph Engelhart (1694–1765) was director of the university music at Uppsala and organist at Uppsala Cathedral from 1727 to 1764. He also directed the Academic Chapel from 1727 to 1765. In 1798, his son Carl Dietric Engelhart donated his father's collection of more than 600 works to Lund University, including numerous copies made by the Gotha Kapellmeister Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel (1690–1749).
This Sonata could well be of German origin, not least because Lund also holds a second major collection of Baroque music, the Wenster collection, in which numerous works of German provenance (especially from Dresden) can be clearly identified despite the loss of the composers' names.
In performance, the work can either be played with the three instruments alone or with the addition of a basso continuo (harpsichord), which can easily be derived from the simple score.
