Concerto a 5 ex Dis (E-flat major) for Horn, 2 Violins, Viola and Basso
The little-known composer Peter Joachim Fick (formerly also referred to as Johann) is represented in the music collection of the Landesbibliothek Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with at least 26 concertos, 6 Baroque symphonies and other works.
Little is known about his life. In 1730 a “Laquay monsieur Fick” was employed at the court of Schwerin, and in 1740 he is mentioned again, this time as court organist. He died in Schwerin in 1743 and was buried in the cathedral cloister on 26 December 1743.
Fick was not only a prolific composer but also a copyist, above all of works by Vivaldi, who evidently fascinated him. Some of these works survive only as his copies, so it is not always certain today whether he composed a piece himself or merely copied it. His name appears several times on title pages as “di PJ Fick”, while on some the “di” is missing.
This concerto (shelf mark mus 349/19) has already been masterfully recorded by Peter Damm and the Staatskapelle Dresden, released by Eterna in 1978. In 2004 these concertos were reissued on CD by Edel Music.
