Antonio Rosetti (1750–1792)
Concerto in F major for Horn (RWV C 53)
Scoring: 2 violins, 2 violas, basso, 2 oboes and 2 tutti horns
According to its title, this concerto was intended for a “Corno secundo principale” and survives as a manuscript set of parts (shelfmark III 4 ½ 4° 276, Augsburg University Library). It can be dated to around 1780.
On examining the parts, it was established that the work originally included a second viola, although the title of the copy makes no mention of it. The first page of the second viola part is missing from the copy. In the new edition, this second viola was restored and the missing portions were supplied.
Likewise, bars 231–239 were reinstated; in the copy they are struck out in all parts except the solo horn and the second viola. The reason is simple: the soloist was to be spared the cadenza. This suggests that the cut was made only for a later performance.
In the new edition, missing dynamic markings could also be supplied by comparing the parts, which were prepared by different copyists.
