Hoffmeister’s Horn Concerto in E major belongs to a series of his compositions for solo horn. For the hornists Zwierzina and Nagel he wrote two concertos for 2 horns (published as ROM 27 and ROM 28). A concerto for 3 horns is also documented, of which unfortunately only the Romance, the middle movement, survives (edited as ROM 35).
The Horn Concerto in D major, previously thought lost and listed in the 1782–1784 catalogue of the Leipzig publisher Breitkopf, was rediscovered in 2010 and has been edited as ROM 282.
The present Concerto in E major is published here in print for the first time. Numerous performances at the time show that Hoffmeister’s horn concertos were extraordinarily popular: in Leipzig alone, three performances (1782, 1799, 1808) are documented.
