Johann Georg Knechtel
Concerto in F major for Horn
– First edition –
Johann Georg Knechtel was a member of the Dresden court orchestra from 1734 to 1773. Little has so far been established about his origins. Until 1756 he was active there as a horn player, at first together with the second horn player Andreas Schindler, and from 1737 with Anton Joseph Hampel (1711–1771). His career coincided with the heyday of the Dresden court Kapellmeister Johann Adolf Hasse (1699–1783), who in his operas for the Dresden court gave the horn players generous solo parts.
This concerto comes from the Alströmer collection, now held in the Music and Theatre Library of Sweden in Stockholm. Alongside the two concertos in D major and E-flat major that are already known, this previously unpublished Baroque horn concerto is the third work for solo horn by Knechtel that can be documented.
