Carl Heinrich Hübler was born on 4 December 1822 in Wachwitz. On 1 November 1844 he joined the Dresden Hofkapelle (court orchestra) as a horn player and was promoted to Royal Chamber Musician (Königlicher Kammermusiker) on 16 October 1851. In recognition of his services he was appointed Chamber Virtuoso (Kammervirtuose) in 1886. He remained in his post until his retirement on 1 November 1891. He was a co-founder of the Tonkünstler-Verein zu Dresden (Dresden Musicians' Society) and served on its board for 25 years. Hübler died on 14 April 1894 in Dresden.
This work is a caprice for horn and orchestra on melodies from Vincenzo Bellini's opera La Sonnambula (The Sleepwalker; French: La Somnambule). According to the Dresdner Journal, Hübler performed the piece with orchestra at the 2nd subscription concert on 29 January 1860.
