In 1817, the composer Friedrich Schneider published the following article in the Allgemeine Musikalische Zeitung (AMZ): 1817 – An Important Improvement of the Horn (in German)
Concerto in E major for 4 Horns and Orchestra
The work was probably premiered as a "Concertino for 4 Horns" on 16 October 1818 in Berlin. The AMZ adds the note "for one valve horn and three natural horns". Further performances followed, including one a few years later by the horn players Schuncke in Stuttgart.
Catalogue entry for the concerto, whose score was destroyed by fire in Darmstadt:
The catalogue lists the work as "Concertino for 4 Horns". The reference to one valve horn and three natural horns comes from the AMZ. It does not prove that the performance was only possible with a single valve horn, but it would certainly have sounded considerably cleaner and more virtuosic with valve horns.
