Antonio Rosetti (1750 – 1792)
Concerto for 2 Horns and Orchestra in F major (RWV C61)
By a fortunate circumstance, no secondary sources are needed for this concerto: it survives in a score that is probably autograph. Rosetti notes in it that the concerto was "fait pour Messieurs Nagel & Zwierzina", written for those two outstanding horn players at the court of Wallerstein. On the score he corrects the date of composition from October 1786 to March 1787 and names Wallerstein as the place of composition.
The numerous dynamic and articulation markings in this autograph score are a delight. The distinction between dot and wedge is notated in an almost exemplary manner. It is precisely these markings that were often lost in later copies, prints and editions. The mastery of finely tuned nuance still makes Rosetti's concertos a unique experience today.
Orchestral parts: 5/5/2/2/5, winds, solo
