Johann Georg Knechtel served in the Dresden Court Orchestra (Hofkapelle) from 1734 to 1773. Little is known about his origins.
Until 1756 Knechtel was active as a horn player in the Hofkapelle, at first alongside the second horn player Andreas Schindler and, from 1737, with Anton Joseph Hampel (1711–1771). His career coincided with the heyday of the Dresden Kapellmeister Johann Adolf Hasse (1699–1783), who wrote richly for the horn players of the Dresden court in his operas, giving them prominent solo passages.
This concerto comes from the Alströmer Collection, now held in the Music and Theatre Library of Sweden in Stockholm. Alongside the two already known concertos in D major and E-flat major, this previously unpublished Baroque concerto is the only documented work by Knechtel for 2 horns.
