About the composer and horn player Alfonso Schettino any biographical information, unfortunately, could be determined.
Saverio Mercadante (1795 - 1870) was a very popular composer during his lifetime. In 1840 he was appointed director of the Royal Conservatory in Naples as the successor of his teacher, Zingarelli.
Under the publishing house number 391, a fantasy about Giuseppe Verdi's "A Maskenball" is published, also in the first print. In 1863, Schettino performed it in the Academie des Conservatorio di Musica in Naples.
The same compositional period can be assumed for the present composition.
