The Mengal brothers are often confused in the specialist literature. There are Martin-Joseph Mengal (1784 - 1851) and his younger brother Jean Mengal (1796 - 1878), both of whom were horn players. His younger brother Jean received his training from the horn player Domnich in Paris and (like his brothers in 1809) won the 1st prize of the Paris Conservatoire in 1814. He was the 1st horn player at the Paris Opera and composed for his instrument. It is therefore not always possible to clearly assign individual compositions to one of the brothers.
Martin Joseph Mengal's “Premier Concerto de Cor a Grand Orchestre” must have appeared in Paris around 1815. Mengal is mentioned in the title as 1er Cor au Theater Royal de Opera Comique. It did not appear in any publishing house, but was engraved and printed at Mengal's own expense. It is unusual that there is a note in the solo part of the horn "Gravé par Caroline Gebauer". Mengal dedicated this concert to his father.
The title indicates that this concert was played as a practice piece in the Consdervatoire of Paris and that it was performed by his brother Jean Mengal (Jeune) before the king.
