Frederic Duvernoy was one of the most respected horn players in Paris in the early 19th century. He was principal horn player at the Opera and a professor at the Conservatory. In some operas, posters would even note that Duvernoy was playing the horn solo. He composed concertos and chamber music for his instrument and also wrote a horn method, which still receives attention today, as Duvernoy played only the natural horn.

Duvernoy preferred the middle register in his compositions; this style is referred to as "cor mixte". In the first edition, the piano is noted in the title as the first instrument, while the horn is listed as an accompanying instrument.
