Little is known about the musician and arranger of these duos, Auguste Schneider, beyond the few details given on the title page. He arranged these horn duos after the opera "Masaniello, ou Le pêcheur napolitain" by the composer Michele Carafa (1785–1872), which premiered on 27 December 1827 at the Opéra-Comique in Paris.
The dedicatee, Charles-Frédéric Kreubé (1777–1846), was a violinist and, from 1816, principal conductor at the Opéra-Comique; he also composed numerous stage works.
The duos first appeared in print around 1830, published by Ricordi.
