Regrettably, musicological literature offers only limited information about the composer Roy. The first edition of this quartet, published around 1815 by the Parisian firm Victor Dufaut, notes that C. Eugène Roy was an Artiste du Théâtre de la Porte Saint-Martin.
According to Fétis, Eugène Roy — also known as Leroy — died in Paris in 1816 at the age of 45, placing his birth around 1770/71. In his final years he served as second conductor at the "Bals champêtres de Tivoli". He was proficient on several instruments and wrote numerous works for the flute, including a number of instructional pieces.
The quartet is dedicated to the horn player L. Poussez, a student of the renowned Parisian hornist Pierre Louis Collin.
