This work, too, has undergone a thorough revision in the present new edition, after it was published by Edition KaWe in 1970. In quantitative terms, the result is 23 more bars in the first movement and 17 more bars in the second.
Rosetti's concerto was composed before 1782 and published in 1783 by the Paris publisher “Le Menu et Boyer” as Troisieme /Concerto /Pour le Cor /Composé / par / A. Rosetti
The two concertos preceding this third one from the same publisher were the horn concertos C 49 and C 52. Concerto C 41 shares several parallels with C 52, which proved very helpful: because of the highly faulty print, a number of passages had to be corrected.
Interestingly, the second and third movements of Concerto C 41 are identical to those of a flute concerto by Rosetti in E-flat major (C 19). It was written between about 1773 and 1776 and published in 1778 by Hummel in Berlin. Which work is an arrangement of the other cannot be determined with certainty. It is notable, however, that E-flat major is a very unusual solo key for the flute.
It is conceivable that this concerto, like Concerto C 49, was intended for the horn player Thürrschmidt.
